MY HEART IS SO FULL, as I AM APPROACHING A NEW MILESTONE
When your child graduates from high school and leaps into the world as an adult, you catch your breath as you wonder, where does that leave me?
You find yourself looking back to when you held them as a baby, as you watched them step onto the bus and drive away for kindergarten, as you took them to open house for 7th grade, and as you watched them get all dressed up for dances and put them in the hands of a young girl or boy. Those are the heart jerker moments. Those are hard moments for parents. You also look at them now and think, I really did something good here. They are strong, confident, self-sufficient, and a true leader and a genuinely kind human being. I did that, YES I DID! Take the credit because you deserve it.
I can’t help but try and picture what this next stage will look like as my role as a parent will change. Will I be my child’s go to person when advice is needed, will I be privileged enough to know their thoughts during their current life stage, and will I be the first one to know when they are happier than words can express? I hope so. I also hope to be the courage if times get tough, the rock if confidence is needed, and the heart when love is in the air. I will be all these things and more. I will be whatever is needed just so my child knows that I can always be counted on to love them in a way that no other soul can love them. I will do that, that is a promise.
The relationship between a mother and child is a relationship that is the foundation of life. We are the beginning of that foundation. And now, I look at you with admiration and pride as I watch you grow into an adult who now teachers his mother a thing or two about life, who now I ask for advice and look to when I need courage to conquer this world, and who now I call my hero. How beautiful is that? Quite beautiful when it was I who created this wonderful person, this complete package of goodness.
Congratulations to all mothers who have graduated their children into the adult world. Enjoy the ride as your role changes as a mother and you learn from your child on your new journey.
YOU HAVE BECOME MY HERO MY CHILD
XO,
Alison
